It's Beginning to Look a LOT Like Christmas!
December 16, 2015
It’s hard to believe we are over half way through December and not far away from the big day itself! Christmas at Great Fosters kicked off on 23rd November when Mrs Young and Russell, our Head Gardener, started decorating the hotel in readiness for the festive season. Trees, garlands, lights and gorgeous decorations began to spring up throughout the building. The biggest project is always the 14th century Tithe Barn where it’s important to keep things neutral so that it doesn’t clash with any colour schemes chosen by our winter brides.
Wednesday 25th November saw 150 ladies (and a few brave men!) descend upon us for our annual Taste of Christmas Lunch – now in its fifth year. The highlight of our Special Events Calendar, the day started with coffee and mince pies and the chance to do a little browsing at our carefully selected pop up shops.
Then it was demo time – this year we managed to squeeze in three which took a fair bit of planning and co-ordinating! Marc, our Head Chef, made everyone’s mouths water with a fabulous pasta starter with pancetta, chestnuts and cranberries. A Christmas pudding soufflé followed which was just to die for - if you fancy having a go at making them click on the photo of Marc below. Our second demonstration was by the lovely Rebecca from Lily’s Flowers who amazed everyone with her spectacular table centre display…which she seemed to just throw together as she chatted away. Answering questions from the floor she dropped in lots of little tips and ideas including a suggestion for an alternative Christmas tree. That just left Karen from Liberty Wines to talk everyone through her perfect tipples for Christmas Day. With over 20 years of experience in the industry she gave a fascinating talk whilst our ladies tasted all seven of her suggested wines.
The atmosphere was certainly merry when everyone met up again for pre-lunch mulled wine prior to a traditional Christmas lunch in the Tithe Barn. We received lots of lovely comments as people departed later that afternoon – which took our minds off our sore feet - and the thinking caps are now back on as to how we make next year even better!
A week later and December arrived along with Christmas parties, festive afternoon teas and lots of lunches and dinners in The Estate Grill and Tudor Room at Great Fosters. Our Wreath Making workshops saw 18 happy ladies walk away with their own hand made wreaths after a morning of coffee and lots of fun for the would-be florists. Looks like that will be a regular feature on our December Events Calendar too! On Sunday 13th December we held our Festive Family Lunch which proved ideal for people struggling to fit in seeing all their family and friends over the Christmas period. The fire was blazing in the Tithe Barn as crackers were pulled and the festive spirit flowed.
So now it’s the countdown to Christmas day itself! We are fully booked for lunch and looking forward to welcoming everyone with Champagne, seafood and caviar on arrival. We are also hopeful that a “special” visitor might make an appearance to delight all the children…despite his busy schedule on Christmas Eve! As always our Boxing Day Buffet has been a sell out too, along with New Year’s Day Brunch. There are still a few places left for New Year’s Eve but the numbers are growing on a daily basis.
And finally, should you still have some Christmas shopping left to do why not give someone the gift of Great Fosters and choose from our range of gift vouchers? Available for a specific treat such as afternoon tea, a special event or an overnight stay, OR for a monetary amount if you would like the recipient to have the choice the voucher comes in a pretty wallet complete with gift tag for you to write your message. Vouchers may be purchased online, by telephone or at Reception and are valid for one year.
So that’s it for 2015! All that is left is to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the team at Great Fosters. If you aren’t joining us over Christmas then we very much hope to see you early next year.
